Sarah and Ernest Butler School of Music

Music has been a critical part of life at The University of Texas at Austin since 1914. The Sarah and Ernest Butler School of Music is where students full of potential find their mentors and guides in a faculty comprised of extraordinary performers, composers, and scholars. We offer a comprehensive array of degree programs from the bachelors to the doctoral level in performance, composition, music and human learning, jazz, theory, musicology, ethnomusicology, pedagogy and liberal studies in music. With a ratio of less than seven to one, our approximately 100 music faculty are able to give more than 650 music majors invaluable personal attention. The Butler School alone presents some 600 concerts, recitals, operas and other special events annually.

THE LONGHORN BAND LEGACY FUND

The Longhorn Band Legacy Fund will become a permanent endowment at The University of Texas at Austin to sustain the Showband of the Southwest for future generations. The Longhorn Band Legacy Fund exclusively benefits the Longhorn Band. Funds are distributed by the Longhorn Band director and the director of bands for financial support of the Longhorn Band, including but not limited to student scholarships, travel, performances, uniforms, instruments and equipment.

Please join us in supporting this new endowment to provide unrestricted support for the Longhorn Band (LHB).

HILLEY PIANO LABS

The Sarah and Ernest Butler School of Music bursts with the potential of some 330 undergraduates who are firmly grounded in what it takes to be a superb musician.

They build this foundation in the piano labs with Professor Martha Hilley.

About 90% of our undergraduate students work in the piano labs with Hilley to sharpen their self-assessment skills, practice collaborative learning, apply music theory in practical ways and become better musicians. The existing labs were refurbished in the late 1990’s.  Over 15 years later, these labs need to be brought into the 21st century.

This spring, we’re thrilled to launch a new video mini-series for the campaign. We’ll be releasing a new video each month with a different highlight. But wait, there’s more! From now until May 31, 2016, donations can go even further. Thanks to generous donors, your gift today will be matched up to $30,000!

Our Piano Labs need a facelift! Won't you be part of the transformation? Give today.

Or, we ask that you give today to support our Area of Greatest Need. Your gift means so much to our students and you help to prepare them for meaningful, productive, and responsible lives in music.
