Get Mentally Strong with Texas Athletics!
In 2016, the NCAA reported college campuses have seen an increase in the number of students experiencing mental health issues such as anxiety and depression. More specifically, 1 in 2 college students will suffer from depression and anxiety, 1 in 5 will suffer from disordered eating behaviors (both men and women) and 1 in 3 will report sleep difficulties. Nearly 500,000 NCAA student-athletes compete in 24 sports every year. In 2015, 30 percent of those 500,000 student-athletes self-reported similar experiences with conditions such as depression, bipolar disorder, social anxiety, alcohol/substance abuse, disordered eating among others. More than half of these students did not receive education on mental health. Student-athletes are believed to be at greater risk than their non-student-athlete peers.
Here at Texas, we believe what starts here changes the world. We look for your support as we continue to ensure our student-athletes gain access to effective mental health management tools while destigmatizing the conversation and spreading awareness. Donations can be made through this website. The fund will directly benefit current and future Longhorns by supporting one-on-one counseling, educational materials, addiction assistance, mental health screening and information on how to access these resources in a health-promoting environment.
