Health Leadership Apprentice Program

Who We Are

Founded in 2017, the Health Leadership Apprentice (HLA) Program at The University of Texas at Austin’s Dell Medical School seeks to provide a more equitable and inclusive mechanism for undergraduate students at UT Austin and Huston-Tillotson to access experiential learning opportunities designed to build a portfolio of health leadership experiences. Opportunities include working with Dell Med faculty and staff or local community organizations on a challenge aimed at building a vital, inclusive health ecosystem. Students also take part in community service learning, guest speaker lectures, and workshops aimed at developing the knowledge required of future health care leaders.

What We're Fundraising For

Students take part in one of three tracks including the house model, opportunity pool, and self-initiated projects. 

  1. The house model allows a group of around 4 students to work on a community issue through Dell Medical School’s Community-Driven Initiatives program on a project that addresses a health challenge, need, or opportunity. 
  2. The opportunity pool allows students to apply to reserved internships posted by Dell Med faculty and non-profit organizations. 
  3. After their first year in the program, students are encouraged to pursue a self-initiated project (SIP) which is typically a continuation of their participation in the house model or opportunity pool. 

Few opportunities provide students with financial compensation despite the many hours that students put into their projects. We are fundraising to offer stipends to students completing projects and internships through our program.

Your Impact

Since 2017, HLA student groups have collaborated with more than 20 nonprofit organizations on community health projects and participated in more than 120 internships. These opportunities are powerful tools for transforming both undergraduate students into capable health leaders as well as the communities throughout Austin that our students serve. From research to community outreach to intervention development, students contribute approximately 5-10 hours per week per semester. Unfortunately, many students are discouraged from accepting internships due to the burden of working without being paid. Your support can help eliminate financial barriers to our students participating in these transformative internships.
