Department of Astronomy

Who We Are

The Department of Astronomy provides training at the undergraduate, graduate and postdoctoral level. As one of the top-ranked astronomy programs in the nation, we lead frontier research in cosmology, galaxy formation and evolution, stellar evolution and star formation, exoplanetary systems, the Solar system and instrumentation. We are a major founding partner in the next generation Giant Magellan Telescope, one of the world’s largest next generation telescopes, and we work synergistically with the McDonald Observatory to advance excellence in research, education and public outreach.

What We're Fundraising For

As state and federal support for higher education continues to decline, UT Austin relies on the generosity of its alumni, friends and supporters to fund high-quality education and support distinguished research programs like those carried out in the Astronomy Department. This private support is critical to the success of faculty and students and allows the department to provide students with educational experiences beyond what can be accomplished with state and federal funding alone. Explore the ways to invest in the department’s future that suits your desire to give back. We are seeking undergraduate support, graduate student support and investments in initiatives such as the Giant Magellan Telescope.

Your Impact

The Department's association with McDonald Observatory (located in the Davis Mountains of west Texas) provides excellent observing access for students and staff and nurtures a leading program in instrumentation development. The observatory is currently retrofitting the 10 m Hobby-Eberly Telescope with 150 integral field spectrographs to conduct the deepest yet survey of the early universe (HETDEX), while infrared instrument builders will contribute to the next generation Giant Magellan Telescope (GMT), under construction in Chile, in which The University of Texas is a founding partner.

Your gift will:

  • Develop a new generation of scientific leaders through fellowships for graduate students.
  • Provide discretionary funding support that gives the department the ability to be nimble in its investment as opportunities emerge.
  • Support education, public engagement and outreach initiatives at the McDonald Observatory that reveal the wonder of the cosmos and excite children and adults alike about astronomy.
