Who We Are
An honors program with an unusual name, Plan II attracts students with intense curiosity about what makes the human experience meaningful. Created in 1935 as an interdisciplinary alternative to traditional “Plan I” majors, Plan II offers a flexible, four-year course of study that students can pair with other majors and degrees at UT. Plan II courses emphasize critical reading and thinking, offer engaging discussions, and develop exceptional writing and communication skills. The program's depth and breadth gives students studying majors such as Business, Natural Sciences, and Engineering a deeper understanding of their fields, and offers all students the opportunity to participate in small, discussion-based courses and delve deeply into a senior thesis project of their own design.

What Our Students Have to Say About Study Abroad Impact:
"My recent trip to Peru...has taught me the importance of teamwork in science. We get by with a little help from our friends. We're hoping to find very important insights on the carbon content of the bofedales, which has significant implications for how our world can combat climate change and what steps we should take to facilitate these natural carbon-sequestering processes."
Kristina Priotto | Plan II, Sustainability Studies, & Geography Senior
"The evolution study abroad program I did in Seville, Spain was transformative for me. Being fully immersed in Spanish culture opened my eyes to new experiences and made me even more interested in learning other languages. The cultural and biological topics I discovered still fascinate me and would make great thesis topics. The grant Plan II gave me was a huge help and relief since finances were no longer my first concern. Studying abroad is an experience I will never forget and I am grateful for Plan II's commitment to helping make this a reality for students."
Niels Levy-Thiebaut | Plan II, BSA Biochemistry, & Polymathic Scholars Sophomore
"My Maymester was invaluable in exposing me to different cultures and enriching my academic and personal development. I made memories and discoveries in Rome that will last a lifetime, and I cannot be more grateful for the experience. I was able to finance my trip through grants and scholarships, allowing me to take advantage of a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity that I would not have been able to otherwise. I loved my time abroad and it's one of the many things I will cherish the most about my time at UT!"
Marlee Randel | Plan II & Philosophy Junior
