Who We Are
The Psychology Department at the University of Texas Austin is a highly ranked scientific powerhouse. We study everything from the single neuron to broad cultural and societal contributions to behavior—and the full range in between.
Over the past ten years, psychological science has been undergoing a revolution. There have been fundamental changes to data acquisition and analysis, as well as best practices for the implementation of scientific studies. There are new innovative technologies for data measurement and collection, such as web-based technologies, clinical and medical records databases, non-invasive neuroimaging devices, and wearable devices that have all advanced our ability to collect data at scale and look at large populations of individuals for the first time. There are also new paradigms for data visualization, analysis, and modeling that have expanded the possibilities for getting insights out of this broad array of psychological data.
Given the importance of data to understanding psychological phenomena, a modern psychology curriculum needs to seamlessly integrate data science in order to adequately prepare our students to meet the needs of the 21st century workforce. The department is focused on creating innovative coursework and more opportunities for hands-on experiential learning like internships and undergraduate research opportunities.
What We’re Fundraising For
The Department of Psychology will be funding summer internship opportunities for undergraduate students who are interested in working on developing their data science skills in faculty labs. The Psychological Data Science Internship will provide the opportunity for students to gain hands-on experience with a psychological data set with guidance from faculty and graduate students. Students will broaden their professional networks through weekly meetings with fellow interns and faculty coordinators that will include professional development tips and discussion of topics in data science. Additionally, the internship will provide undergraduate students with a $2,000 stipend.
The Psychological Data Science Internship Program is a part of a larger data science initiative, which aims to:
