The University of Texas Kendo Association is an on-campus Recreational Sports club dedicated to education and the practice of Kendo on campus. Kendo in Japanese literally means the "way of the sword" and like other martial arts has a deep history in both sport and culture.
What We’re Fundraising For
As Kendo is the "way of the sword" we need equipment to properly be able to perform our sport. This equipment not only includes the shinai (swords) that we use in practice but also the bogu (protective armor) that we use to not hurt each other. As this armor fully covers the upper body and head it is quite expensive to purchase a set, and new members often have to borrow club equipment. As our club receives new members, either old members or new members end up having to buy personal bogu for themselves resulting to a sharply increased individual price in the club. We would like to raise money to purchase more and updated equipment for the new members in our club so that the personal economic burden is lowered and a standard of safety is kept.
Gifts to UTKA will allow the club to get better protective gear for students of the club, along with this we will be able to purchase more shinai and other gear necessary for Kendo and students will not have to purchase them for themselves as often. Besides just gear any donation to the club allows us more freedom in choosing which events we go to, right now do to pricing limitations we are only able to go to Kendo tournaments and seminars within the state. With more money available we could raise the potential of going to tournaments to other places in the country at a price that students can afford.
