Support Experiential Learning in the Black Studies Collective!

WHO:

We are the Black Studies Collective at The University of Texas at Austin. We have an astounding and unique collective endeavor like no other Black Studies initiative in the country. With a history rooted in activism, the group draws its strength from four distinct yet aligned campus units – the African and African Diaspora Studies Department, the John L. Warfield Center for African and African American Studies, the Institute for Urban Policy Research & Analysis, and the Art Galleries at Black Studies

Students have access to play a large role in cutting-edge policy research, thought-provoking scholarship, and robust arts and cultural programming, happening every day at Black Studies at UT Austin

WHAT

We’re Fundraising to create and grow our experiential learning opportunities for our students within the Black Studies Collective. Every dollar we raise will go directly to this initiative.

The AADS Domestic Study Program in New York City offers a unique learning experience for UT undergrads who wish to experience life in one the world’s “global cities,” and will once again be offered to students in the summer 2023 semester. Over the course of four weeks, students explore the history of America’s largest metropolis: from the conquest of indigenous land, to the city’s involvement in the U.S. slave trade and the plantation economy, to its central role in the industrial revolution, to its status as a destination point for migrants from around the world and, finally, to its emergence as the preeminent transnational city.

The city itself is the classroom, as the course is structured around first-hand visits to major landmarks and historic neighborhoods including African burial grounds, ports, factories, tenements, Harlem, el Barrio, Chinatown, Bed-Stuy (Brooklyn) and Jackson Heights (Queens)—to name a few. Students also visit major museums and collections, meet with community-based organizations and attend a range of cultural events (music, film and theater).

The program is popular among students who are unable to travel internationally owing to their residency status. It is also popular among students who have an interest in exploring social and cultural movements that took shape in New York City, such as PRIDE, which is celebrated in New York City each summer while the program is in session.

Your support will provide students with scholarships to help defray program costs (tuition, fees and travel), ensuring that students will not miss out on this experiential learning experience because they lack the necessary financial resources.
