Latino Studies
Latino Studies & "La Tiendita"

Who We Are

Latino Studies is a powerhouse of Latino thought and advocacy at The University of Texas at Austin, fearlessly upholding the mission of ethnic studies by creating space to explore and understand the lives of Latinos in the U.S while using our knowledge and resources to support Latino communities everywhere.

What We're Fundraising For

Latino Studies

Latino Studies is comprised of three distinct units: the Center for Mexican American Studies (CMAS), the Department of Mexican American and Latina/o Studies (MALS), and the Latino Research Institute (LRI). Together we are fiercely committed to the empowerment of students, scholars, and communities for the purpose of realizing a just and affirmative future for all. Each unit pursues this shared goal somewhat differently, and each one requires the resources to adhere to the highest standards of research, study and community engagement. With your donation, CMAS can support its student and faculty affiliates in the study of cultural practices, historical development and socio-economic conditions of Mexican American & Latina/o communities. Your contribution enables MALS to offer an academic foundation within the context of students' personal experiences, and prepares graduates for careers in the arts, advocacy and other professions, in which advanced knowledge in the field is crucial. Your funds support LRI in the creation of new knowledge through research and the cultivation of future leaders through its training programs. Please consider funding the efforts of all three units in Latino Studies to build a better future for Latino communities, and all communities.

La Tiendita Student Pantry

La Tiendita student pantry has been addressing food insecurity among our students since 2017. Latino Studies' confidential, free, donation-based pantry offers non-perishable food items, toiletries, household cleaning products, and more.

La Tiendita is frequently utilized and very much appreciated by our students! We make every effort to keep our offerings healthy and plentiful, and our hope is to add fresh produce to our pantry this year. However, this is challenging with our limited funding. Please consider contributing to this very worthy cause: keeping our ambitious hard-working students nourished as they pursue their higher education goals at the University of Texas at Austin.

La Tiendita is accessible around the clock in the main hall of the Gordon-White Building, home of Latino Studies.

Your Impact

Your donation makes a huge impact to the students who rely on Latino Studies to safeguard their minds, bodies and spirits. In their own words:

"Latino Studies is my home away from home. The friends, connections I have made truly changed my UT experience and I am so grateful for that."

"Latino Studies is a place where I feel safe, I feel like I belong. Es un rinconsito donde puedo aprender y ser feliz, being my true self. My home away from home."

"Latino Studies means community, amazing food, a family away from home and people like me."

"Latino Studies helps me acknowledge that I belong here at a top tier university. They support that I have a place."
