Who We Are
Established in 1979, the Center for Women's & Gender Studies (CWGS) supports the research and programming efforts of faculty and students in women's, gender, and sexuality studies. In 2023, CWGS became part of the new Department of Women's, Gender, and Sexuality Studies (WGSS), which houses the undergraduate and graduate academic programs. WGSS offers a unique interdisciplinary undergraduate program, including: a Bachelor of Arts degree in Women's and Gender Studies, minors, an honors program, student scholarships, and a transcript-recognized Certificate program in LGBTQ Studies. We are also home to a nationally recognized, interdisciplinary Master of Arts in Women's and Gender Studies!
What We’re Fundraising For
The mission of the Center of Women’s and Gender Studies (CWGS) at The University of Texas at Austin is to promote research, teaching and learning in the field of women’s, gender, and sexuality studies.
Some of our programming includes:
INSPIRE: A three-year program (sophomore to senior), pairing undergraduate students with a graduate student mentor, created in response to the continuing inequalities in educational attainment and career advancement for women.
The Powers Endowment for Women/Gender Studies offers annual scholarships to WGS students in good standing who are academically motivated and emerging leaders in their communities. The Center for Women’s & Gender Studies owes much of its growth over the recent decade to former University President, William C. Powers. During his inaugural address in 2006, President Powers identified the College of Liberal Arts as important players in his vision for the university. When you support an endowment, your gift keeps on giving because the fund continues to grow (with interest)!
The Faculty Development Program helps to support outstanding new faculty members by providing them with mentors, research funding, and a forum for discussing their latest research.
The WGSS Graduate Student Conference provides an opportunity for undergraduate and graduate students to develop their professional presentation skills and share their exciting new research in progress.
Your Impact
Here at UT, many of our students, staff and faculty are facing personal crises: housing insecurity, income insecurity, health insecurity, family insecurity, professional insecurity. These issues remind us that our work is still important and needed. Now more than ever your gifts will make a difference to our faculty, students, staff, and community.
Gifts designated for CWGS will be distributed to our areas of greatest need; they will help preserve and enhance programming, develop courses, fund endowments, and support outreach initiatives in the new Department of WGSS.
We appreciate your support!
