Help Landmarks Return Sound in Sculpture to Campus
Bringing Inspiration to Everyday Life
Landmarks' public art collection is celebrated for offering art experiences that are free and accessible to all. For many students, Landmarks offers the first opportunity to engage with great works of art.
Seeing Sounds
Sound in Sculpture is a popular multidisciplinary event that features student-composed music written in response to works of art in the Landmarks collection. Presented in partnership with Texas Performing Arts and the Butler School of Music, the program is now in its eighth year. Covid 19 forced last year’s event to be held online, but this year, Sound in Sculpture will be held on campus at an outdoor location.
Previous compositions for Sound in Sculpture have ranged from voice and instrumental arrangements to piano solos to dance performances. The event offers a unique way to engage with Landmarks and imagine new creative forms.
“This process made me realize how much thought goes into creating these sculptures. We often go about and pass them by, not realizing their intricacies. They’re almost “ambient” in a way. It was also interesting to see how Square Tilt fits into Joel Perlman’s artistic path, moving from angular works to more rounded and circular ones.”

For one night in April, performances will be held in-person against the backdrop of works in the Landmarks collection, including Sentinel IV by artist Simone Leigh. Musical performances will be available online along with commentary from the participating composers.
“Some of the composers think about the meaning behind a specific work, some think about the way the artwork was created, some pay attention to the physical materials. There isn’t a single right or wrong way to respond to art. That transfers to there not being one right or wrong way to artistically respond to art."
