Department of Economics

Who We Are

The Economics Department is one of the largest departments at The University of Texas at Austin, with over 500 students graduating each year. The undergraduate program trains students to think objectively and independently about a wide range of economic topics. With an emphasis in the application of data analytics, mathematical tools, and writing skills, the Economics major prepares students for professional careers in industry, finance, government, law, and teaching.

What We’re Fundraising For

For many of our students, some of the most impactful experiences occur outside the classroom through initiatives made possible by the generous support of alumni and friends. During this 40 for Forty campaign, we are seeking investments for undergraduate student support in three primary areas:

Undergraduate research: The Economics Undergraduate Research Fellowship provides a unique opportunity for undergraduates to get involved in academic-quality research. During the fellowship, undergraduates work closely with PhD candidates in the Economics Department on research and receive mentorship in navigating research-oriented careers and graduate school applications. A gift of $250 supports a fellowship for one undergraduate student to participate in this program for a semester.
UTNY scholarships: In order to help support students interested in the UTNY program (a semester of study and internship in New York City), the department aims to provide need-based scholarships to help defray the higher living expenses of New York City. The UTNY program provides an exciting and valuable experience for Economics students.
Career services: In addition to the career services traditionally provided by UT, the department uses additional resources to support our alumni speaker series (Economics@Work), bringing back alumni to campus to share their experience and expertise with current students. We hope to expand this program in order to get all undergraduates involved.
