Who We Are
Hundreds of veterans are enrolled at UT Austin. Before they ever set foot on campus, these men and women have already achieved a lifetime’s worth of experience. They know teamwork. They know grit. They have a deeper understanding of what “working hard” means than just about anyone. They have sacrificed. Every time a Veteran chooses to study at The University of Texas at Austin, we’re honored. They served our country; now we serve them. Veteran and Military Affiliated Services in the Office of the Dean of Students is how we ensure our Student Veterans receive the financial, academic, and health support they need to thrive.
What We're Fundraising For
We help Student Veterans pay for college in a few ways. First, we work with them one-on-one to access any federal or state funds they’re entitled to—including G.I. Bill, Hinson-Hazlewood benefits, and/or tuition assistance. Our staff knows the ins and outs of receiving and maintaining funding throughout a Student Veteran’s time on the Forty Acres.
We also offer scholarships because many of our Student Veterans have expenses that exceed what they receive from federal and state benefits. The generosity of our donors ensures that more Student Veterans are able to attend UT Austin without taking on serious debt. Our staff is constantly seeking to create additional scholarships aimed at Student Veterans of all types.
For some student veterans, the adjustment to university life offers unique challenges and considerations: which academic discipline best complements their skills, how to manage study time, how to meet key deadlines, etc. Our team is there to help them figure it all out. We offer free tutoring, academic planning, peer coaching, and mentor programs—all designed to help Student Veterans excel.
Your Impact
“It’s been said that if you’ve met one Veteran, you’ve met one Veteran,” explains Jeremiah Gunderson (SSG USA (Ret.)), M.A., Director of Veteran and Military Affiliated Services. “Our Student Veterans come from all walks of life, but they share similar challenges—challenges that are far different than most of their peers. Many student Veterans are first-generation, non-traditional, parents, spouses, workers, and homeowners—all while attending college.” Your support is crucial in helping to make a difference in the lives of these students.
