Who We Are
With over 6000 affiliated students as part of our active membership, our Sorority and Fraternity community is a dynamic part of the UT community! Our students represent over 60 sorority and fraternity organizations that are governed by 6 unique governing councils.
Sorority and Fraternity Life strives to shape a values-based sorority and fraternity experience. We cultivate educational and leadership development, in collaboration with individuals and organizations, to foster a culturally conscious, safe, and responsible community contributing to a positive sisterhood, brotherhood, and siblinghood.
What We're Fundraising For
Sorority and Fraternity Life Programmatic Support:
Sorority and Fraternity Life welcomes new members, supports aspiring leaders and advises council officers in the community. With your financial support, we can continue providing programming in the following areas: leadership development, safety and risk management, cultural consciousness, student recognition, and alumni engagement.
Virtual Student Conference Registration Assistance:
The value of experiencing leadership conferences at a national scale is a rare opportunity that can be very costly and a strong barrier for student attendance. In the midst of COVID-19, many organizations have transitioned to a virtual format for conducting business. We understand that there is still an expectation that students attend their national/local conferences. By donating to this initiative, our office would be able to support students' virtual (and eventually in-person) registration costs which would allow them to gain a broader perspective on their membership in this larger fraternal community.
Virtual Campus Presentations and Workshops:
To provide more education on our culturally-based fraternal organizations that are part of our SFL community, we want to bring a national speaker to provide an educational and engaging presentation entitled: “All We Do is Step, Stroll, and Hop? What is a Black & Multicultural Greek Organization?”
Additionally, a workshop that would benefit our culturally based fraternal organizations would be partnering with Phired Up Productions to offer their organizational growth strategy and coaching services. Supporting this campus presentation and partnership would bring more awareness to our culturally based fraternal organizations and assist our students with the recruitment of members as well as sustain relevancy on predominately white institutions.
Your Impact
This past February, Sorority and Fraternity Life supported a representative from the National Pan-Hellenic Council, Multicultural Greek Council, and three from our Latino Pan-Hellenic Council to attend the 2020 Black + Multicultural Greek Empowerment Summit in Atlanta, Georgia. Our students enjoyed this conference so much! Here’s what they had to say:
“Looking around at a PWI it was already hard to find multicultural Greek life to begin with and once we did it finally made us feel like we belong, however it became clear that some spaces were still not built for our experiences as students of color."
“Attending a conference solely meant for Multicultural Greeks and listening to the speakers there made me feel seen for the first time and it made me feel like my experiences were valid. It made me feel like I was not alone through what me and my community were experiencing.”
“Having someone who shares our similar experiences and has a similar background come to share wisdom and their experiences will empower us to continue to succeed in these spaces and to feel like it is okay to seek answers to questions we don’t know.”
“I don’t think people of color are ever told enough how out of place they will feel after coming to a university as big as The University of Texas at Austin. Since I've been here there have been numerous times when I have felt like I don’t belong and the only thing that made me feel more comfortable here has been joining a culturally-based organization. Having the opportunity to attend the 2020 Black + Multicultural Greek Empowerment Summit made a huge impact on my college experience because I felt as if I could actually speak for once, without being judged whether it be by the people that attended as well or the group of us that went from the same campus and we would want to bring that same atmosphere here on our campus”
Your gift of any size will support Sorority and Fraternity Life and our student community and allow us to elevate the sorority and fraternity experience at UT Austin
