Who We Are
The Unions is partnering with students and staff on this collaborative effort to bring roof top gardening spaces to our buildings. The monies raised will help us to turn roof top patio space into vertical and raised gardening beds. This opportunity will facilitate space and resources to our staff and students to plan spring and summer gardens that will ultimately yield produce that can be provided to those with limited access to fresh fruits and vegetables. We plan to be able to provide a steady supply to such outlets as the UT Outpost once the garden is established..
What We’re Fundraising For
Our rooftop gardening plan was the result of receiving a Green Fund Award that allowed us to purchase the materials necessary to construct vertical planting beds at the Texas Union patio space. We will be fundraising to provide student employees and staff with the tools and additional resources to turn this roof top garden into a wonderful and collaborative opportunity to grow their own fresh produce on campus. This is a sustainable initiative that will teach students and staff alike how to grow different types of crops that are suited to our climate and planting seasons.
We hope to turn this into a sustainable source of fresh produce for those that participate as well as the UT Outpost to provide nutritious and home grown produce to those that need it most at a low or zero cost. This is a study/work/life balance initiative intended to bring wellness and mindfulness into the daily routines of those participating. We wish to offer Eco therapies and opportunities to increase satisfaction and well being in our daily lives while learning valuable skills and knowledge that can be enjoyed for many years to come.
This is a fantastic opportunity to work with a group of diverse people and participate in a healthy initiative. This collaborative opportunity will teach teamwork and provide each person with the skills and knowledge that can be shared with others while working with diverse groups that they might not otherwise had the opportunity to engage with. We wish to impart the importance of volunteerism, and giving back to the community and to those in need while focusing on healthy and sustainable eating and mindfulness in their daily lives. We want to ensure all those that wish too have the opportunity to get outdoors and grow their own food and take a moment out of a hectic day to breath and grow something green and beautiful!
