Black Studies Domestic and International Study Abroad Programs
“There is so much to learn about human rights and social justice in Ghana.” That’s what Kasia O. had to say with excitement when reflecting on her month in Ghana, Africa, studying the culture, collaborating on research with the country’s educational and political institutions, and exploring narratives of the Black diaspora in other settings.
When we step outside our comfort zone and experience other cultures, our understanding and capacity to think innovatively expands. For most students and alumni, that started the moment they arrived on the Forty Acres. Recall how being on campus changed your view of the world. Now imagine being a part of the effort to make the desire to learn globally, a reality, for students.
When you give to support Black Studies Study Abroad Programs, you help students’ education become more well-rounded and meaningful. Better-equipped students means they are better prepared for their future careers and life.
Students who face financial challenges often can’t afford to travel abroad – or within the United States. The cost of tuition and living expenses home alone present challenges, so the possibility of continuing studies in another state or country, is often not an option. Black Studies Domestic and International Study Programs understands the financial and experiential barriers and work hard to eliminate both. First, each student who is accepted into the program is offered scholarships. Second, by including domestic programs in Los Angeles and New York City, students are able to build their confidence in traveling closer to home, while still interacting with global communities in these internationally diverse cities.
Thanks to you, students like Kasia can apply what she learned in the classroom, practically, in the field while in Ghana.
For 50 years, Black Studies has led UT Austin’s efforts to build a campus that is inclusive and diverse for students and faculty. We believe that borders are meant to be crossed, boundaries are meant to be pushed, and breakthroughs happen when we are stretched and inspired by new experiences. That’s why Black Studies is committed to taking students abroad to places like Los Angeles, Nicaragua, Africa and New York City. You help shape an education that is first-class – locally and globally. Please give to support Black Studies Study Abroad Programs today.
